On August 25, 2026, the world lost a little bit of its sparkle when Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80. For more than six decades, Dolly gave us songs that became part of our lives, but she built a legacy that extended far beyond the stage. She gave generously, championed children and families, supported causes close to her heart, and seemed to move through the world with an extraordinary capacity for compassion. Among the many lives touched by that compassion were those who couldn't thank her with words—the animals she loved, advocated for, and helped along the way. As we remember Dolly and everything she gave to the world, it seems especially fitting to remember the four-legged friends who held a special place in that famously enormous heart.

The Dogs Who Became Part of Her Story

Long before pet brands and children's books, there was Cracker Jack.

Cracker Jack was Dolly’s beloved childhood dog and apparently left enough paw prints on her heart that she would later immortalize him in the song “Cracker Jack.”

The song isn’t really about just a dog, of course.

Anyone who has ever loved one understands that.

It’s about the kind of friendship that asks for very little and somehow gives you everything.

Years later, another dog would become important during a much different chapter of Dolly's life.

Popeye, a Boston Terrier Dolly shared with her husband, Carl Dean, was by her side during the 1980s and reportedly provided comfort during a particularly difficult period in her personal life.

Sometimes the animals who enter our lives aren't there merely to share the good years.

They're there to help carry us through the hard ones.

And then there is Billy the Kid.

The French Bulldog technically belonged to Dolly's manager, but Dolly claimed a very important role of her own: godmother. She affectionately referred to Billy as her “god-dog.”

Billy eventually became something of a celebrity himself.

He inspired Dolly’s children's picture books and became an ambassador for another animal-centered chapter of her career: Doggy Parton.

Doggy Parton: Fashion With a Purpose

In 2022, Dolly launched Doggy Parton, a collection of pet apparel, accessories, toys, and other products.

The name alone is pretty hard to resist.

But behind the rhinestones and adorable dog outfits was something much more meaningful.

The brand was created with a charitable component benefiting animal rescue efforts, including support for Willa B. Farms Animal Rescue, a Tennessee nonprofit dedicated to helping animals in need.

It turned something fun—spoiling our pets—into another opportunity to help animals who haven't yet been lucky enough to find their person.

Showing Up for Animals Who Need Help

Dolly's concern for animals extended beyond household pets as well.

Through her work and philanthropy connected with Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains she called home, wildlife and conservation have also remained part of the larger picture.

It is one more example of something that has defined Dolly Parton's life: remembering where she came from and giving something back.

A Different Kind of Legacy

Dolly Parton's legacy will always include the songs.

“Jolene.”

“9 to 5.”

“I Will Always Love You.”

The rhinestones. The big hair. Dollywood. The unmistakable laugh.

But legacies aren't built only from the things that make someone famous.

They're also built from what someone chooses to care about once they have the ability to make a difference.

A little girl from the Smoky Mountains loved a dog named Cracker Jack.

Decades later, that little girl became one of the most recognizable women in the world—and she never seemed to lose the part of herself that understood just how much an animal can mean to a person.

Maybe that's one of the loveliest things about Dolly.

For all the fame, awards, stages, and spotlights, she has always seemed to understand something remarkably simple:

Animals make our lives better. And when we have the opportunity, we should make theirs better, too.
