Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year.  Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.  Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes.  And the main reasons animals are in shelters: owners give them up, or animal control finds them on the street.

There are many reasons that people surrender a pet:

Behavioral issues – Sometimes pet behavior problems seem overwhelming, but many can be managed with the application of a little knowledge and a little effort.  Dog obedience classes are a great help and whether it’s a long-time friend or a newly adopted dog, sometimes we all can use a little help in this area! Obedience classes and dog trainers are dedicated to helping you and your dog understand each other better, through the use of positive, family-friendly training techniques.

Can’t afford care for the pet – Families sometimes find themselves facing hardships that affect how and if they can continue to care for their pet.  Check with your local food bank to see if they keep their pet pantry shelves stocked as well.  For medical issues, there are organizations nationwide that assist pet owners with veterinary care. 

Domestic abuse or natural disaster situation – If you are in a domestic abuse situation, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1 800 799 7233.  Often times, women will stay in an abusive situation because they think their pet isn’t allowed at a women’s shelter.  There ARE options besides surrender for women and their pets.

Moving/inadequate housing – It’s important to do your research when looking for pet-friendly housing.  You want to give yourself time to do some research, and start your search at least six weeks before you plan to move.  Keep in mind that you may have to pay an extra security deposit to cover any property damages your pet might cause (although I personally think pets are no more destructive than children), and be sure to discuss deposits and monthly pet-related fees in advance.

Here are a few sobering facts to ponder:

  1. About twice as many animals enter shelters as strays compared to the number that are relinquished by their owners.  Many strays are lost pets that were not kept properly indoors or provided with identification.
  2. Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. Overpopulation, due to owners letting their pets accidentally or intentionally reproduce, sees millions of these “excess” animals killed annually.
  3. Remember that cute designer breed puppy that you saw online? It may end up being 1 of 4 purebred dogs that enter local shelters.
  4. Only 1 out of every 10 dogs born will find a permanent home.
