While temperatures rise, it is important to remember that your pets experience the same harsh temperatures we do, sometimes worse. In Florida it gets very hot and things can happen very quickly. With the heat and humidity, we have here, pets can rapidly become overheated. And our furry friends can also experience something you may not think about.
Dogs can get sunburns just like people can. Talk to your veterinarian about finding a dog or cat safe sunblock. Apply it to any areas of the body that can receive direct sunlight so the bridge of their nose, the tips of their ears. Of course, light colored dogs are more susceptible.
If you go outside and cannot comfortably place your hand on hot pavement for a long period of time, then it is not safe for any animal to walk on either, as it could cause injury to their paws.
If you have an outside pet, check the material that their shelters are made of, as that plays a part in keeping the pet cool. Wood is a better insulator as it doesn’t retain heat as much. It can still get hot in direct sunlight, but plastic and fiberglass tend to retain heat a lot quicker.
Summer heat makes animals more susceptible to heat strokes, especially dogs such as bulldogs that might have trouble breathing. If your dog is acting frantic, if they cannot calm down, their gums are bright red and they’re having vomiting, diarrhea or they collapse, removed the dog from the hot environment immediately and get to your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime, providing fresh water, ice cubes, plenty of shade, and ventilation in the form of a fan can help your pet cool down and calm down.
And PLEASE - Don’t leave your dog in the car in any weather, whether or not the windows are cracked. Even on a cooler day. the temperature in a closed car can rise to 130 degrees Fahrenheit in minutes. The dog’s own body temperature increases the heat and moisture (especially for larger breeds), using up oxygen, and death can occur within 15 minutes. Leave your dog at home where they are safe, comfortable, and cool!
