The past 28 days have been hectic and BIZARRE for me, to say the least! I left my job of 7 years for something new and exciting at the end of February, and while I was getting acclimated to the new job, the world stopped spinning on its axis due to Coronavirus/COVID-19.
I was volunteering at my local shelter, enjoying doing shelter pet photography with my photography partner Peggy. Then Coronavirus took over the world – literally. It was the week before St Patrick’s Day, and we dressed the animals in festive green attire. Little did we know at the time that that day would be the last shelter pet photography session for a yet to be determined amount of time. Our camera shutter had been shuttered.
The shelter is currently being run on a skeleton crew of employees and volunteers. Anyone wanting to adopt a pet must make an appointment to do so. There can be no more than 10 people in the building at any given time, and those people are required to keep a distance of 6 feet between them (just like everyone else is being told to do). Many of the shelter’s animals are out in foster homes, to reduce the number of animals that employees and volunteers have to care for.
While we’re going about our daily lives, concerned with toilet paper, paper towels, and social distancing, the dogs and cats of America’s shelters still need us. And if anything, we need them as much as they need us. Please foster or adopt, and 2 hearts will be comforted at the same time.
