What does a Canine Companion do? Well, pets awaiting new homes need some extra TLC in the shelter environment. This includes exercising, socializing, and providing companionship, and working with them on their sit/stay/down/paw commands. Dogs are a social obligate species – they NEED social companionship to be emotionally healthy. They enjoy sitting quietly with a canine companion away from the loud adoption floor, getting brushed, getting petted, getting belly rubs, and getting unhurried one on one attention.
Canine companions distribute enrichment toys and treats, we do light housekeeping, such as tidying up a dog's kennel while they are out on a walk (mopping, providing fresh bedding, toys, and refreshing water bowls), giving them a nice, clean, and comfortable space to return to, we help with laundry, dishes, and other various tasks, and facilitate meet and greets with potential adopters.
